I have used both polytone and Urethane. The polytone will never shine like a Urethane finish or a good dope finish. I painted my Pitts with polytone when the Stits (polyfiber) people told me it could be polished out like dope. Don't believe it, it will polish out some but only after ruining 2 shoulders and cracking the finish at ribs and formers. Also, with polytone you must add a de-glosser to your Urethane or enamel, that you will need to use on fiberglass and aluminum, so that the gloss will match the polytone. Polytone does not work well at all on Aluminum or Fiberglass and I don't care what the Polyfiber people say. The advantages of polytone and dope is that they are very easy to spray, repair, dry in minutes verus hours and have a lower health risk. Both can me blended in over old finish. However, I would go with dope over polytone, if I didn't use Urethane. Polytone is fine if you don't mind a finish that will not be as shinny as dope or as durable as Urethane. If you want a flat finish like some Antiques or military stuff go with Polytone. I'm sticking with Urethane first and Dope second on my next projects. The disadvantage of Urethane is the health hazard, so a ventilated booth and fresh-air breathing system are required, A Urethane is also a little more difficult to repair because it will not blend in. My 1D has Urethane (polyfiber brand) and it looks pretty decent.
