CHAMPIONSHIPS OF THE AMERICAS TO BE HELD IN FOND DU LAC
Fond du Lac, Wisconsin -- The International Aerobatic Club has held its annual championships in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin since 1970. In 1998, however, IAC will embark upon a substantial expansion of the event in scope and in its international status.
This year, the IAC championships will also become the "Championships of the Americas". In late 1997, IAC sought and obtained the full approval of the FJ dJ ration AJ ronautique Internationale (FAI) Aerobatics Commission to upgrade the event to a continental championships to encompass the entire western hemisphere. FAI is based in Paris, France and is the world governing body for all air sports activities throughout the world. Nearly 90 countries are members of the federation including the United States. IAC represents FAI in this country.
Aerobatic competitions consist of several skill categories including Basic, Sportsman, Intermediate, Advanced, and Unlimited. Competition is also flown in glider aircraft and in addition to hosting the Championships of the Americas, IAC will also feature the 1998 U. S. National Glider Aerobatic Championships. National Champions will be named in glider categories and a U. S. Glider Aerobatic Team will be chosen to compete in the 1999 World Glider Aerobatic Championships in Austria.
Gold, silver, and bronze medals provided by the FAI -- the most prestigious and highly sought after awards in air sports -- will be awarded to the winners in Advanced, Unlimited, and Glider Unlimited categories at Fond du Lac. These medals represent exceptional achievement in aerobatic flying and are identical to the awards which will be presented at the World Aerobatic Championships being held in the Slovak Republic in late August of this year. Last year, Fond du Lac was one of the venues for the selection of the United States Aerobatic Team, who will compete in that world event. U. S. Team members are expected to participate in the first Championships of the Americas as a warm up prior to their departure for Europe in early August.
The IAC Championships and Championships of the Americas competition will begin on Monday, July 13th and continue through the 17th. The general public is welcome to attend all days of the Championships. A nominal admission will be charged for the Fond du Lac Cup only.
