IAC Contest Results

The last IAC contest of 1997 brought 34 pilots to Chandler, Arizona to contend for iron at Arizona State Championships jointly sponsored by Chapters 62 and 69. In addition to the usual category trophies, year-end points totals were at stake.

Contest Director Rick Aldom decided that this was a contest that should be a memorable contest, so when the pilots got their first glimpse of the impressive trophies, it seemed that everyone tried just a little bit more. >From the trophies to the banquet at the Rusty Pelican Restaurant, each detail revealed the extra attention Rick had put into welcoming the competitors and volunteers. What a superlative job he did!

No Arizona contest is complete without the talents and efficiency of Maryilnn Holland. A jack-of-all-trades, Maryilnn was up to her usual high level of productivity as Volunteer Coordinator and made sure all the points for Championships were totaled correctly. Without Maryilnn, a Contest Director's job is so much harder, and she was rewarded appropriately at the banquet.

Starter Dean Stapley wasn't about to take any chances that good weather would stay with us for the weekend. El Niño had threatened to decrease the number of pilots and flights, but the akro gods kept the light rain at bay until the last pilot touched down on Saturday.

Start to finish, all the officials operated more than competently. Tech. Inspectors Pat McGarry and Ron Hunter got the pilots ready to send in to Carolyn Melby who did an outstanding job as Registrar. We thank Chief Judges Sandra Bullock (Sportsman), Ron Straub (Intermediate), Hal Raish (Advanced) and Dick Johnson (Unlimited) for their expertise and time on the Line.

Kay Eddlemon kept us all fed wonderfully, and John Walkup (now a Pitts dealer) once again hosted the contest at Chandler Air Service.

The Tucson and Phoenix Chapters thank all the pilots and volunteers for coming, and a special thanks to Bob Earl of the Chandler Tower for his eagerness to assist in making this a safe and enjoyable contest.
