The 1996 Robert L. Heuer Classic

or

The Invasion of the Monoplanes

When was the last time you can remember a contest that had just as many monoplanes as biplanes? June 22 and 23, Chapter 1 hosted its annual tribute to the First President, and one of the founders of IAC, Bob Heuer., and when all the entries had arrived, and we started flying, that's exactly what we had. 4 Basic Contestants, all flying Decathlons. 15 Sportsman, 4 Decathlons , 2 J-3 Cubs, 1 Yak 55, 2 Cap 10, 4 Pitts and 1 Eagle. 8 Intermediate,5 Pitts, 2 Yaks and 1 Stevens Acro. Advanced, 4 Pitts and 1 Yak, and in Unlimited, 2 Pitts.

Some planes had more than one person flying it, so those are the number of contestant The weather was great, so we flew three flights for all but Basic, who flew twice. The complete list of results will be in the Newsletter, but I have listed the firts three places in each category below.

Among the highligts this year was a plaque presented to Dave Schatz, naming him as Chapter 1 Sportsman of the Year. The plaque read: IAC Chapter 1 Sportsmanship Award. The members of IAC Chapter 1 proudly recognize DAVE SCHATZ for his outstanding contributions toward the promotion of aerobatic flight and the spirit of sportsmanship. June 22, 1996

Chapter 1 is fortunate to have many of the early members of IAC among its numbers. Bob Heuer, Dan McGarry, Pete Meyers and Don Dewitt were in attendance this year. Dan is still an active competitor and Don has returned ,and listening to this group telling war stories about the early days was worth the price of admission.

The trophies, slices of crystal with an irregular outline on a wooden base, were admired by all, particularly those who flew well enough to earn one. Award Tophy and Emblem, of Bolingbrook, IL did them, and if anyone wants to contact them, the phone number is (708) 739-7800.
