The 1997 Tequila Cup Regional Aerobatic Contest, sponsored by the Southern Arizona Aerobatic Club, was held November 6-8, 1997 at Avra Valley Airport, near Tucson, Arizona. The clear skies in all directions enticed 43 competitors to wing their way to Tucson on Thursday, 6 November. The beautiful weather (cool mornings, warm daytime temperatures in the mid -80's, little wind) continued throughout the weekend. Any "Outs" received by a pilot was due to his own skills or lack there of. The most hotly contested category was Intermediate with 16 pilots, followed by the Sportsman category with 17 pilots.

The Highest Scoring First Time Sportsman trophy was won by Gary Dawson, of Santa Fe, NM, flying a Pitts S-2B. The Highest Scoring Competitor Flying a Pitts was Bill Connor of Boulder, CO (also flying a S-2B). Bill was a Sportsman competitor too and Bill and Gary finished first and second respectively. This was the first Tequila Cup for both of them and from all accounts, it won't be their last.

The Mike Ilyin Memorial Trophy for the Highest Scoring Super Decathlon was Nancy Eppard of Wickenburg, AZ. Nancy has been flying a Super Decathlon and competing in Intermediate for many years. Her love for the Decathlon is as great as Mike Ilyin's for whom the trophy was named.

The Tequila Cup Team Trophy was won by Chapter 69, Phoenix Aerobatic Club.

As usual the volunteers worked long hours without any complaints, especially those who were from Canada and New England. The sun's warmth completely drove away thoughts of cold, wet weather back home. The tech inspectors, Fred Abdallah, Jack Tinnin and Gary Phalzgraff, met the incoming aircraft and were ready to do the tech inspections as soon as the pilot stepped out of his plane. Hal Raish started the practice flights at 7:30 AM. On Friday, Mic Williams and Dean Stapley were the starters and they kept the planes flowing constantly. Along with Chief Judges Dick Johnson, Mark Kinder and Hal Raish, they kept one in the box, one in holding, one on the runway and one strapping in. Because of their efforts, every pilot got three flights and we were able to finish by 4:00 PM on Saturday.

Joe Kutschka as Volunteer Coordinator made sure there was minimal time lost in changing the judging lines. With the aerobatic box 2 miles from the airport, this was no small feat. Because of so many non-flying volunteers, many of the pilots found themselves with time on their hands. For some strange reason, there were no complaints from them! Sally Leidig did a great job as the Registrar and Michal Racy ran the Score Room so efficiently she even had time to take her dog for a run around the airport.

At the close of flying on Friday, slightly before sunset, everyone gathered at the hangar for pizza and beer provided by the Southern Arizona Aerobatic Club. No one went home hungry as there was more than enough for even the hungriest crowd. However, the pilots and volunteers returned Saturday morning and consumed the Continental breakfast as if they hadn't eaten for a week.

The members of SAAC would like to thank all of the pilots and volunteers for coming. We loved having you here and we hope to see each of you again.
