THE 1999 KEN HOLLAND TEQUILA CUP was held 4-7 November at Marana Northwest Regional Airport near Tucson, AZ. With 44 power competitors and another 17 glider pilots, the 1999 Tequila Cup was the largest ever. The large number of non-flying volunteers was a major factor in the success of the contest, which was dedicated to Ken Holland, long-time Southern Arizona Aerobatic Club member who died suddenly in July of a heart attack.

Several contestants arrived early and kept the box occupied when not helping with the last minute chores of a contest. Jack Tinnin and Roger Rourke handled the tech inspections on Thursday and the registration was under the control of Georgianne Carroll. Helping her was Roann Rourke, Kathy Straub and Nan Dawson. Mic Williams and Dean Stapley, coordinated the practice session, and then were the starters for the contest. They kept a pilot in the box, a power pilot in one holding area and a glider pilot in another holding area. At the judging line was Hal Raish, maintaining radio communications with both holding areas and the starter and kept the chief judge informed as to who the next pilot would be, glider or power. Rick Aldom and Hal set up the radio communications so that Hal and the starters had a separate frequency, a frequency to communicate with the pilots and one for the chief judge to communicate with the corner judges. It worked! Little time was lost in getting pilots in the box. Joe Kutschka was the Glider Coordinator, as he was last year, and with glider ground crews and 3 tow planes, he kept all of them organized. Michel Racy and Phil Oppendahl ran the score room and with the help of Karen Ungar and Jasmine Leidig, had the scores tabulated and out in the most efficient manner. Carolyn Muchow was the Volunteer Coordinator and the newest member of the contest team but she had the volunteers at the judging line on time and never lost her smile or laugh. She even had her paperwork up to date! Steve Leidig served as one of the Boundary Judges for EACH flight both days. Safety Director, Brian Chesebro, had little to do as there were no safety issues. Everyone observed the no prop zone, flew safely and the weather was near perfect. Our Medical Officer, Dr. John Carroll, didn't even need to preach "hydration" as everyone drink plenty of bottled water. The Continental breakfasts, cold drinks on the judging line, cookies and anything else to do with food was in the capable hands of Sally Leidig. The Saturday night banquet was arranged by Michael Racy and Pete Shepley in the conference hall at Precision Shooting Equipment. We had better facilities there than at any of the restaurants that we have used over the years. With 107 at the banquet we needed the space!

Chief Judge Mark Kinder did the briefings and chief judged Advanced. Brian Howard did a glider pilots and tow plane pilots briefing on Thursday which shortened the briefing on Friday. Brian was also the chief judge for Sportsman and he ran all of them through in about 2 hours and 20 minutes. Roger Rourke was Chief Judge for Unlimited and Intermediate. All categories except Advanced Power and Sportsman Power and Glider flew three flights - just not enough daylight in November for 61 contestants.

My special thanks to to everyone who came and who honored Ken by their presence. Some may not have known Ken but to me, they represented others who couldn't be there. By the end of the contest, they had heard many stories about him and knew he had shared their passion for flying. My thanks and appreciation to those who came to volunteer and who worked so hard all weekend and most especially, the Southern Arizona Aerobatic Club, who worked to make this a very special contest. Ken would have been proud of all of you and he would have been humbled by the attention and the praise.
