SHIRLEY, N.Y. (AP) -- A Queens man who survived the crash of a small plane
that killed the flight instructor remained in critical condition Wednesday, a
hospital spokesman said.
Ivan Jaklenic, 26, underwent surgery following the Tuesday afternoon crash,
said Dan Rosette, a spokesman for Stony Brook University Hospital. Rosette
would not elaborate on the type of surgery performed.
Jaklenic was at the controls of a Pitts SB2B Acrobatic biplane when it
crashed at 12:45 p.m. in a grassy area short of the runway at Brookhaven
Calabro Airport, said Officer Gregory Moran, a spokesman for the Suffolk
County police. The plane was apparently coming in for landing.
Anthony Perner, 62, of Westbury, Long Island, was killed in the crash.
Both men, licensed pilots and instructors, apparently had flown into and out
of Brookhaven airport several times. Perner was a qualified acrobatic
instructor; Jaklenic had taken several acrobatic flying lessons from him.
