To all of Paul's friends,
I can't say that Paul was the single best thing about the SA team in
Slovenia, but he was certainly a big part of the many things that made them
so fun to be around. He was having fun, wanted everyone else to have fun,
and went out of his way to share the joy. His skill with computer hacking
and pictorial composition continues to impress me even today. ('nuff said)
Paul called and asked if he could come over and fly my Zlin at our
nationals. I arranged the necessary insurance, etc, and then got a call
from him 2 days before the contest that he was stuck in Angola with "very
big troubles", and couldn't get out in time to make it. Paul reflected the
best of the SA Team tradition that makes them welcome at any contest in the
world, with easy access to airplanes. I'm sorry my fellow 'Mericans didn't
get a chance to experience him. It might have reminded us just how much
fun this is supposed to be.
To the SA team...
Paul is being missed over here, as well. Please feel my thoughts being
sent to all of you, and to his family (that I never met). There's a very
big hole in our world where Paul used to be.

RE: Bad news from South Africa
Mike,
Yesterday we lost one of the pilots who had competed in Slovenia, Paul
Heyns. Paul had recently imported a CAP 222 from Belgium and had attended a
training camp over this weekend. I personally had reviewed a flight on
Tuesday morning in which he flew the Advanced Q Programme to a really good
standard probably avergaing 75%, given he had only four or five hours on the
aircraft this was very encouraging.
Sadly last evening he was killed apparently after a spin, near his home
airfield Kitty Hawk near Pretoria, we have no real details of what went
wrong.
Best regards,
John Gaillard
