As an active car racer and pilot, I have read this thread with interest. I do
not get into my race car without a triple layer nomex suit (tested to provide
protection from 2nd degree burns at 1700 degs for 9 secs only !), nomex
underwear, socks, balaclava, gloves, full face helmet,Halon system that squirts
between my legs (priorities) and foam filled tank which is virtually
indestructable blah blah blah.
In my B, fire protection is tee shirt and shorts, like most others.
Why ? Once you familiar with the options, it is based on individual risk
assessment. Sure, there are exceptions ( I once survived a road accident
because I wasn't wearing a seat belt when the car was crushed and I was thrown
out) but the highest risk in aerobatics appears to be addressed by wearing a
helmet. That to me is the place to start. I think the other risks rate much
lower down the scale (except when it happens to you ).
It's individual preference and this is just my opinion.
