Message:

This is a "call to arms. . ."

The announcement on pages 16-17 of the May safety edition of SPORT
AEROBATICS asked for your participation in the IAC Aerobatic Leadership
Pledge Program. Unfortunately, we may have left you hanging. The pledge
card intended for your signature and return was incorrectly assembled into
the magazine before mailing. As a result, you must turn to page 41 to find
the appropriate card. Please, take a few minutes to retrieve your May
magazine and the Aerobatic Leadership Pledge card, sign it and return to
IAC.

Now to make things more complicated, let me tell you that the pledge
message itself had undergone some fine tuning, and, unfortunately, its text
appeared in the magazine incorrectly. The differences are subtle, but
important. Especially important because participants in this initiative
should have an accurate understanding of the intention and expectations of
the pledge itself. The correct version is at the end of this message. No
one will complain if you wish to make the changes to the pledge text before
signing your own card, if you care to do so. In fact, it would be
inspiring to see cards returned that way, but we anxiously await them in
any form!

The Aerobatic Leadership Program was announced in various publications
before the official announcement was made in the May Sport Aerobatics. I
hope that this fact and the errors made in the official presentation do not
dilute the strong message and the resulting participation by members.
Please, please join the "movement" and return your pledge.

I know by past and recent discussions on this list that all of us care
deeply about safety. And, at this particular time where we are grieving the
recent loss of an aerobatic pilot friend, may I suggest that spending the
time and effort to participate in this program may help heal the heartache
and put forth a positive energy within our group?

I have often wondered how close we could come to 100% participation with
this program. I admit, I have secretly hoped for that. Let's become a loud
and collective "one voice" on this issue. Let's give 'em TOO MUCH mail to
open next week.

P.S. Thanks and recognition should go to chairperson Dave Lammers, who
conceived this program, and to honorary co-chairs Kirby Chambliss, Diane
Hakala and Tom Poberezny.

AEROBATIC LEADERSHIP PLEDGE

I, , publicly promise to set a
leadership example in sport aerobatics by complying with the high standards
of the International Aerobatic Club and with the rules of regulatory
authorities.

And, further, if I observe someone flying with disregard for these, I shall
privately and without threat coach that person in responsible aerobatic
conduct.
