Golden Knights, Civilian Planes Collide

Marana
March15, 2002 01:23 PM

One person was killed today when a plane used by

the Army's Golden Knights parachute team collided with a civilian aircraft
in Marana.

Spokeswoman Katherine Heiden of the Northwest Fire District says a single
body was found in the wreckage of one plane. She says it's debris now, but
it was obviously a very small plane.

Heiden said there were no signs of a second plane at the crash scene,
although an Army spokesman had said there were two planes that had collided.
Heiden said it wasn't clear whether the downed

plane was the military aircraft.

Aerial footage shot by a television news helicopter showed the wreckage of a
small plane in the desert about a mile east of Marana Airport.

Emergency personnel could be seen in the area but there were no signs any of
them were going through the wreckage.

The Golden Knights, the Army's parachute team, are based out of Fort Bragg,
N.C., but had been conducting training Friday at the Marana Airport, north
of Tucson, Smith said.

He said the team does its training out of Arizona during the winter.

Marana Airport Manager Roger Dougan confirmed there had been a crash but did
not give any details.

Friday's collision was the second accident around the Marana Airport
involving a military aircraft in two years.

In April 2000, a Marine Osprey, a plane that can take off and land like a
helicopter and fly like an airplane, crashed there, killing all 19 Marines
aboard.

Subject: [Acro] Mid-Air at Marana AZ -- any details?

Reuters is reporting that an Army jump plane for the Golden Knights team
collided with a small plane near Marana airport and crashed. This
reportedly
occurred after the team had exited the jump plane. See:
