COPPERSTATE 2002 -- March 21-23, 2002

Well it's over and all our competitors have safely
returned to their home base. The weather was typical
Arizona in March: sunny, occasionally windy, sometimes
cool, but mostly warm. Fifty-one pilots from Arizona,
California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, and
Washington flew into Casa Grande to provide plenty of
competition. Our only regret was that we were not
able to fly the 3rd Sportsman flight due to the large
number of competitors. An exciting 4-minute free at
the end of the day by Jon Nash, Mike Racy, and Mike
Mangold provided lots of consolation. Best maneuver
of the contest had to be Mike Racy's "Hover Wag" in
the (not 4-minute) free; a testament to the power of
the Sukhoi and Mike's stick & rudder work -- truly
deserving of the special Cochon Volant award.

At the danger of leaving someone out, we need to
recognize our many volunteers. Mark Kinder acted as
Chief of Chiefs for the judges and Kirk Vanderziel
lived out on the judging line: judging, assisting, and
keeping track of the judging logs. Dean Stapely got
all of the pilots started promptly and safely, with
UNICOM being handled by Francois Bergeron and Chris
Nehls. Bob Peters, professional VC, rounded up all
the volunteers and got them to the right spots at the
right time. For example, on Saturday morning, we went
from the start of pilot briefing to first maneuver of
the day in record time - 38 minutes! Linda Huey
provided food for the mornings and a wonderful
Kabob-fest for the Friday night cookout. Keith
Heineman of IMAC stepped in at the last minute to take
over the scoring duties. Jan Markham handled most of
the registration duties, as well as being co-CD. Hal
Raish drove out from California just to volunteer as
Chief Judge, Judge, and all-around helper. Thanks to
all of these and the many other, but no less
important, volunteers for making a successful contest!

We hope we'll see you next year!

George Norris,
ex-CD
