Help , Ive got problems !
Can someone suggest the most reliable of the
Steerable tailwheel options for a Factory S2A .
I have had Haigh (castoring)and Maule steerable,
and both have been constantly troublesome as follows.
My S2A(certified Air Transport Op's) was
bought with the Haigh tailwheel installed, little red nylon tyre(elevator
wheel, best suited to a Grand Piano !) was wearing out too quickly, and was
buying them in bulk at considerable cost, also took it's toll on the brake
pads, due added requirement to use diff braking in crosswinds due no steering
with that system. Actually caused several brake failures on one side,
fortunately without major incedent.
Replaced the Haigh with Maule steerable unit, with
the solid rubber (heavy) tire. This has been less than acceptable aswell,
with the single casting axle arrangement having failed (snapped off) several
times, along with constant wheel bearing attention required and resultant tailwheel overtaking the aircraft on rollout
Seems almost impossible to predict the failure of
the casting, as crack checking during 50hr inspections doesnt always detect the
