  Paul, the key word in your question is experimental.  If your experimental S1 
was built exactly to the Pitts plans the tank will come out rather easily by 
removing the diagonal cabane.  However, "experimental" can mean a lot of 
stuff was changed by whoever built it and in that case you may find very 
little actually matches the plans.  You have apparently been doing lots of 
work on your bird recently.  If you have found that it pretty much matched 
the plans so far, than likely the tank will come out without too much fuss.  
It is time consuming, but rather straight forward.
