The designation of the Known being a qualifying flight has always been somewhat of a mystery to me. Anyone, regardless of experience can enter a contest at any level and fly the known without anyone officially challenging his or her ability to safely fly that known. Because the unknowns are typically a little less challenging than the known and perhaps the freestyle, perhaps the safety issue is really a non-issue for most pilots. I personally enjoy knowns and don't find them any less safe than the knowns and frees. This is not to say that the unknown doesn't provide a bit of a challenge for pilots, I just believe that we as pilots typically know our limits and will fly safely. Drew L.
