Thanks to all who have responded on the subject of wheel landings. Let me just add that my mail message was intended to get a discussion flowing, not present my feelings on the subject - which are irrelevent, except to me. In fact, I deliberately tried to keep my ideas out of the original message. I just wanted to take the temperature of the readers of this list on the subject of wheel landings. It seems as though the consensus is that wheel landings should be learned at some point, though not in the beginning. There is dispute over the idea that a wheel landing allows more control in a crosswind. However, each side of this issue seems to have unending fact to back up it's position. The regulation also does, indeed, require wheel landings, I had misread it to state that wheel landings were required only if appropriate - and this could then be argued. As many if the responses stated, they must be taught only if prohibited in the particular aircraft in which the endorsement is given. All in all, an interesting discussion. - Ford
