The results are in of the FIRST IAC contest of 1996! Wes Winter Akrofest, a
memorial contest named in honor of one of the first Presidents of IAC Chapter
69 (Phoenix) was held this weekend, February 10 & 11, 1996 in Chandler,
Arizona.
The 9 pilots competing in this Basic and Sportsman contest were challenged by
strong crosswinds, but the contest ran smoothly and safely. The true sense of
grassroots aerobatics that was felt throughout the weekend was underlined by
Leroy Peterson's tribute to Wes Winter at the Awards presentation.
This contest was about the love of aerobatics, and the man who taught us how.
Wes Winter was a true believer in the value and importance of new
Basic/Sportsman pilots, and felt that they were (and are) the foundation of
the IAC. Since Wes flew a light blue Pitts S-1C, the contest T-shirts were
made light blue with renderings of his plane. Also, the trophies were
beautifully constructed in acrylic with a large "WW" screened on the back to
remind us that Wes is always in the background of the Phoenix Aerobatic Club;
and as one our founders, we have much to be proud of.
