The method is not completely unknown; 'help passsword' has the
following in it

4. There are some programs out there that ask for the password and
then mail what you type to the someone else.  Be wary, the only time
the average user needs to type the password is when logging in and
when changing the password.

comp.risks can be rather fun reading for the various methods of
finding out passwords.
