A few years ago when the One Design airplane was still on the drawing board, Eoin 'Doc' Harvey an idea. We aleady had some airplanes that would put pilots into evenly matched competition from an equipment perspective long before the new design had been utilized by enough pilots to allow its use in competition. Doc proposed that we have a contest using a Cessna 150 Aerobat for the Basic Category and a Super Decathlon (8KCAB) for Sportsman. Thus, the Doc Harvey Original One Design Contest was started. That was five years ago. The late Doc Harvey would be pleased to see that this tradition continues. The 1997 edition will be held in Houston on April 19th (20th is a rain day). Bring your own airplane or rent either type for the contest. Some seasoned competitors have said this is one of the most enjoyable contests they've attended. I know of one Unlimited competitor who couldn't spin an Aerobat in Basic and couldn't even get a patch with stars. The contest is just good old fashioned fun....not too serious. 5th Annual Doc Harvey Original One Design Contest April 19th Harbican Airport (about 5 miles NW of West Houston Lakeside, IWS). Briefing at 9:00 am. Watch this space for more information as the contest date approaces, e-mail me at AcroDrew at aol.com if you have questions, or watch for the announcement in Sport Aerobatics.
