  The great virtue of the 180 constant turn approach has,  (which has already
been pointed out) a minor and largely avoidable risk of mid air collision.  I
personally know of one such (ten feet) and two actual crashes from just this
scenario.  All three occured to very experienced high time pilots.  No one is
immune.  

Rather than making a smooth constant radius turn how about checking your
potential collision threat avenues by weaving a bit.  Do anything to reduce
the risk of being in a constant bearing angle to another aircraft.
