It still takes 1 1/2 to 2 years of someone's life span to build an aircraft
from plans, even a simple one such as the 1 D. What is a satisfactory annual
wage for a "hired gun" builder? That must be added to the cost of materials
and components.

If the owner doesn't do all the work and farms some out, the price goes up,
quite understandably. Very few, if any, builders are capable of producing
those items firewall forward. At least half of the cost of the 1 D exists
firewall forward. Someone, at sometime has to pay for the intensive, highly
skilled labor of producing those items. An inexpensive new airplane can not
be created.

One Design Builder,

Dick Rihn
