The third annual Green Mountain Aerobatic Contest, held this past weekend in
Rutland, VT, is now in the history books. 40 competitors arrived bring
perfect weather on Friday and Saturday. Saturday we flew the first basic and
sportsman flights and the intermediate, advanced, and unlimited knowns and
unknowns. Sunday, even with a short weather break, we flew the second
sportsman flight and the intermediate, advanced, and unlimited frees.
Order of flight in Rutland had been changed to known, then unknown, then
free, and pilot response to this was overwhelmingly good. Several people
told me that even after a few years of competition, this was the first time
they had the opportunity to fly an unknown in competition. Our weather is
always a wildcard in the northeast and I feel this change in order of flight
added to the competitive nature of the contest.
Incredible assistance throughout the weekend gave us a really smooth
contest. Volunteer coordinator Dave Klingebiel had the judges changes so
well put together that on several occasions there was no gap between
catagories. We'd lanuch the last intermediate pilot and push the first
advanced pilot to the start line. One group of judges and assistants would
stand up and a new group would sit down and flying would continue.
Co-director Kathy Hulett ran registration like a well-oiled machine and
chief judge Jerry Gerdes kept the show moving.
We had a great group of corporate sponsors for the contest, including Penn
Yan Aero, the engine overhaul shop located in Western NY. Bill Middlebrook
has told us Penn Yan will continue to play an active role in sport aviation
and was very generous in his financial support of our contest. Garden Time,
a local nursery and garden center, provided us with food, drink, and a
gazebo that we used to feed the judges and volunteers. Set up as a holding
area for judges, this really helped keep our day moving. Many thanks to Fred
Troelestra for his his support. We also received merchandise support for a
raffle from Perrone Leather, Sporty's Pilot Shop, and the Rutland Holiday Inn.
We gathered a goup of people this weekend who all worked together to make
this a truely fun and memorable contest. Competitors, volunteers, and
non-competing judges all joined together with a single focus. We had a
weekend filled with successes and I offer my deepest thanks to all who
contributed.
