I enjoyed Dan Rihns kind comments on the 1983 Nats held here in
Mesa,Arizona.I generally agree with Dans weather comments although I
thought I recalled an afternoon of rain during the week.We did get lots
of flying done.On the subject of the protest Dan alluded to, chapter 69
had held a regional contest in the spring and some of the unlimited
pilots had flown in it in what would be the nats contest box.The protest
took the position that the regional participants had had an unfair
advantage by having flown in the box some 6 months prior to the nats(it
was a team selection year). The protest was upheld and the decision was
to allow all the unlimited pilots a practice flight to "level the
playing field".Even with this extra time used, the contest was flown off.
I think that the majority negative comment on the site was the fact
that it was an extra days flying beyond the Sherman site for the pilots
coming from anywhere east of Texas. Also, for those who had not flown in
the west previously, the terrain is a bit daunting.A forced landing could
involve a 50 mile hike in an area east and south that is very steep
canyons. The tradeoff for those of us who live in the west is 100mile
visibilities and no 2500 foot TV towers coupled with scud running in 2-3
miles of vis.It was also the contest at which Leo was zeroed on his
freestyle for entering the box while Debbie was flying hers.It was a
good nationals with the usual mix of good flying, controversy, intrigue
and fellowship.
	Thanks Dan
