 > The 1997 Northeast Aerobatic Championship, held last weekend at
> Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, NY was an outstanding success.
> Beautiful autumn weather allowed us to fly 59 pilots in four
> categories, including two marathon 34-pilot sportsman flights.
> First-time CD John "Fat Taco" Caccavale did a fantastic job with the
> organization of the contest, and Volunteer Coordinator Jeff Berlin
> kept the categories moving smoothly. Vinny and Kathy Nasta handled
> the registration duties with their usual efficiency.
>
> The Chief Judge was John "Coach" Cornwell, with assistance from Jerry
> Gerdes.
>
> Many thanks to all pilots who attended and especially to those who
> came to volunteer and judge without flying. Special thanks to:
>
> - Malloy Air for their assistance and donation
> of 25 gallons of fuel to the first place winner
> of each category.
> - The Gabreski Airport tower staff, who seamlessly
> fit in our special procedures with the rest of the
> busy airport traffic. These folks are true
> professionals.
> - John "Fat Taco" Caccavale for the Friday night
> dinner of Fat Tacos and Ribs, and for making those
> great wheel chocks.
> - George Cole, who donated new chairs for the
> judges line.
>
> The only sad note of the weekend was the retirement of John "Coach"
> Cornwell from aerobatic competition. Coach has been a competitor in
> the Northeast for many years and his participation at each contest was
> always eagerly anticipated, both for his piloting skills and his
> endless stream of jokes. He is a founding member of Chapter 91 and
> his friendship and guidance over the past few years has been an
> inspiration to us all. Chapter 91 has dedicated a special award in
> his honor, the John "Coach" Cornwell Sportsmanship Award. This trophy
> will be awarded each year to an IAC member, not necessarily an active
> competitor, who has selflessly donated their time and talents to
> promote the sport of aerobatics in the Northeast. Thanks Coach, and
> best of luck in the future.

> Awarded to two young ladies piloting a Decathlon
> who landed at what they thought was Gabreski
> airport in inland New Jersey. The real Gabreski
> actually resides in NY, near a beach on a big island
> surrounded by an ocean. After searching the
> airport and wondering where everyone was, they
> called the contest and we got them pointed in the
> right direction, 150 miles to the east.
>
> * A second signed Pitts poster *
> Kent Christman. This was awarded as a result of an
> experiment suggested by Ray Rose, in which the
> "hot box" panels were left red during the entire
> Sportsman sequence. After many competitors flew,
> Kent was the first to mention to the chief judge that
> the panels were not white when he was cleared into
> the box.
