The problem is that the loss of the nails allows the ribs to "float" on
the spar.  The spar passes thru a hole in the ribs and the sharp edge of
the rib above and below the spar will cut across the grain and weaken
the spar.  There is a limit (1/16" I think) on the acceptable depth of
the damage before the spar must be repaired or replaced.  

Not good if you're flying and not fun to fix.
