Just to add a bit more to the crankshaft flange issue: Lycoming Service
Bulletin 465 requires that, on the lightening hole crankshafts, the flange be
visually inspected every 25 hours, AND magnafluxed at 200 hours time in
service and every 100 hours thereafter. So, in order to be in compliance with
the S.B., you have to visually inspect every 25 hours plus magnaflux every 100
hours. And, from the service bulletin: "NOTE: Lycoming does not recommend
using the dye penetrant method for this inspection."
Me? I use dye penetrant after the visual inspection.
