I think we are getting there on the "what is a 10 score slow roll?" question. Thinking especially about Dorsey's descrpition of the longitudinal axis, the separate roll axis, and the cg, then overlaying Dungan's judgeing criteria . . . we are getting at Peterson's subject "barreling" which I experience in my airplane as longidudinal axis "wobble". I have often wondered how judges deduct for three dimensional deviations described as "barreling." Do they count the excursions left, right, up and down? Is that four deductions? Full points for each? How can a visibly barrelled roll ever count more than a six? Do they count them as excursions and corrections for eight deductions? How then can a visibly barrelled roll ever score higher than a two? ORRRR are US judges out of the "deductions" business on all figures, as I suspect they are on an 80K figure in unlimited. (If there are eight major rolls and loop components in an 80 K figure and all eight are flown to a 9.5 . . . the highest possible score is a SIX.) >>> "Dungan, Greg D" <DunganGD at navair.navy.mil> 07/16/99 09:40am >>> Thanks Ray. Don, I do agree with you that there are areas where the Red Book criteria need more clarification. a roll on a horizontal line is a 10 when the CG never varies from a level (horizontal) flight path and the heading of the longitudinal axis never varies from the X or Y axis; even if a strong cross-wind is blowing a competitor across the box, heading must remain aligned with the box axis the line is on.
